About Us

Our dynamic programs are results of the Somali Bantu community creating culturally appropriate solutions to self-identified needs that were left unmet after settling in Maine, and are products of a collective visioning process that has evolved since the SBCA was founded in 2005. The SBCA’s Board of Directors, Executive Director, and majority of staff identify as Somali Bantu and Muslim, with close ties to the immigrant community we serve.

We are uniquely positioned to respond to challenges facing our community, with lived experience and sensitivity to the cultural setting and understanding of how to best create an environment for our people to prosper. As an organization led by and for a historically marginalized group, the SBCA demonstrates what equity and inclusion looks like here in Maine.
