Meet Our Farmers

Abdi:

When did you move to Maine?
I moved to Maine in 2008.

Do you have a favorite memory on the farm?
My favorite memory from the farm was when we planted an African variety of squash called Katito.

If you were a vegetable, which would you be and why?
I would be a carrot because I have great eyesight and I am tall and thin.

What is an interesting or special fact about your community that you would like the people visiting our website to know?
I would like people to know that we are really hard working people. Our people are often thought of as welfare dependent but despite this rumor we have created many successful businesses and lives in Maine.

Has Liberation Farms improved your life?
Yes.

Gamana:

When did you move to Maine?
2005.

Do you have a favorite memory on the farm?
I have good memories of harvesting large amounts of my favorite vegetables- beans, chard, sukuma (collard greens) because I know that a lot of it will be able to feed my family.

If you were a vegetable, which would you be and why?
I think I would be a tomato because I used to be overweight. However, now that I eat so many farm vegetables and exercise on the farm every day I am much thinner so I don’t know. But I still love tomatoes so I would be a tomato.

What is an interesting or special fact about your community that you would like the people visiting our website to know?
We have a background of farming. We have been farmers for generations, and a majority of our farmers are women!

Has Liberation Farms improved your life?
Of course, yes. In so many ways.

Hassan:

When did you move to Maine?
2009.

Do you have a favorite memory on the farm?
My best memories of being on the farm are planting traditional vegetables from Somalia, and especially our African corn. It is really amazing to see this corn from our home growing in Maine.

If you were a vegetable, which would you be and why?
If I were a vegetable I would be a zucchini because they grow quickly and are ready to go every day.

What is an interesting or special fact about your community that you would like the people visiting our website to know?
We are very hardworking people and we are trying hard to be self-sufficient. This farm project is part of that mission.

Has Liberation Farms improved your life?
Absolutely.
